You have deployed a Windows Failover Cluster (WFC) running on Windows Server 2016 or Windows Server 2019.
You are trying to enable a shared storage disk as a cluster shared volume (CSV) in the cluster. You receive the following error: "Error code: 0x800713b8. The cluster request is not valid for this object." Also the $cluster.EnableSharedVolumes property stays to Disabled state and cannot be changed.
Solution #
Try the following steps to resolve the above error:
- Destroy the cluster and remove the Windows Failover Clustering feature from both servers. Then reboot the servers and add the Windows Failover Clustering feature again and try the process from scratch. In some cases the initial installation may be corrupt and by resetting it the new configuration turns out to be healthy and running without issues.
- If you have deployed the Active Directory domain services role on any of the servers comprising the Windows Failover Cluster, strongly consider creating a change plan for moving the Active Directory domain controller role to another server, either physical or virtual. It seems that the Windows Failover Clustering feature does not work well together with the Active Directory domain services server role, even though technically (and in theory) they can work together. However collocating these two components in not a wise decision.
