In this KB article, we will provide you with instructions on how to configure your OpenAI ChatGPT account. It is assumed that you have a paid plan for GPT4. Part of these instructions also apply for the GPT3.5 free features.

Carry out the following steps.

  1. Visit the OpenAI website at . Start by opening your preferred web browser and navigate to the OpenAI homepage. Click the "Log in" button. Choose to login via a Microsoft, Google or Apple account or even use your own email. Click on the Microsoft account option to proceed.
  2. After you have logged into your account it is time to carry out a baseline configuration of the ChatGPT user interface. For starters click on the bottom left hand corner three dots icon next to your name and click "Settings and Beta".
  3. On the "General" tab you can choose your UI theme and also have the ability to clear all chats created up to this point by clicking the "Clear" button.
  4. On the "Beta features" tab, if you have a paid GPT4 plan, (Plus), you have the option to enable the "Plugins" and the "Advanced data analysis" option. Advanced data analysis was formely known as code interpreter. With plugins, ChatGPT knows when and how to use third-party plugins that you enable. With advanced data analysis, ChatGPT knows how to write and execute python code, and can work with analyzing data from file uploads. Please note that uploaded files will not persist beyond a single session.
  5. On the "Data controls" tab, you can enable or disable the chat history and training option. This option allows you to save new chats on the specific Web browser to your history and allow them to be used to improve OpenAI models. Unsaved chats will be deleted from OpenAI systems within 30 days. This setting does not sync across browsers or devices. You can also manage your shared links, which are links to ChatGPT discussions. You can also export your data and delete your account, if you need to.
  6. As a last but important step, you should configure ChatGPT "custom instructions". Again click on the three dots icon next to your name and choose "Custom instructions". In the new window you have the option to provide a description of up to 1500 characters about what you would like ChatGPT to know about you to provide better responses. In a separate field you can also provide a description of up to 1500 words about how you would like ChatGPT to respond to your questions. Ensure that the "enable for new chats" control is enabled and then click "Save".

You can now start chatting with the chatgpt model and engage into a full discussion with it. If you need to share any of your chat sessions at a later time with external users, click on the top right hand icon named "Share chat". This will pop up a form in which you can optionally change the chat name and click on the "Copy link" button to get a link which provides a read-only version of your chat to external users.

You are now ready to start making use of the generative AI capabilities of the OpenAI ChatGPT 3.5 and ChatGPT 4 models. In upcoming videos we will be covering prompt engineering techniques and how-to instructions for ChatGPT 4 plugins and advanced data analysis.
